Summary:
Problem: Minecraft crashes after logging in to Xbox Live when Windows 10 Game Mode is on.
Solution: Turn off Game Mode from the Windows 10 game bar.
These steps worked for me.
1. Find the Windows 10 Xbox app. Right-click => More => App Settings.
2. Click Reset.
3. Open Minecraft - DO NOT log in to Xbox Live.
4. Press Win-G to start the Windows Game Bar.
5. Turn Game Mode OFF.
6. Back in Minecraft, log in to Xbox Live.
7. (Give the hamsters a moment to start running.)
8. Minecraft starts running smoothly like it used to.

Details:
About a month ago the Windows 10 edition started crashing on all three of my PCs. Usually on the initial menu, but sometimes in the game very shortly after starting. Resetting did not help. Reinstalling did not either. This one has had me stumped for a while.
I noticed that things seemed to start stuttering right after Minecraft would log in to Xbox Live. So, I went in to the app settings for the Windows Xbox app (the app is just called Xbox) and reset it. Doing this keeps Minecraft from automatically logging in to Xbox Live on startup.
Without logging back in to Xbox Live, I would then run Minecraft and NOT choose to log in to Xbox Live. Running as Steve, everything worked great. As soon as I would log in to Xbox Live, Minecraft would start stuttering and would soon crash.
After trying all sorts of other things, I finally remembered that Windows 10 has a game bar that you can invoke by pressing Win-G. This game bar gives you the option of running games in Game Mode. Game Mode is supposed to improve the performance of games running on Windows 10. I thought that maybe running in Game Mode might help since I do have an older PC. While running Minecraft, not logged in to Xbox Live, running as Steve, I pressed Win-G. It turns out that Game Mode was already turned on (though I don't remember ever doing that). I clicked the icon to turn Game Mode off.
After turning off Game Mode, back in Minecraft I was able to log in to Xbox Live. At first it seemed like it was going to freeze again, but after a very brief pause, everything starting running normally like it always did. I repeated this process on my other two PCs with the same positive results.

I've also noticed that if I start the Xbox App while Minecraft is running, there's a good chance that the Minecraft app will either slow down significantly or just disappear.
We are also affected, versions 1.5.0 through 1.5.3. I could reliably crash the system by starting Minecraft and entering settings menu. The settings menu immediately got so laggy I could not even change any settings or close the game. If left to sit the system would eventually crash completely.
System is HP Stream 14 (HP product number HPST14AX000NO) Windows and all drivers fully up to date. 4GB RAM, Intel HD 400 graphics, 2.48GHz N3060 Intel CPU. A rock bottom low end system.
Logging out of XBox Live fixed the issue, thanks to Mike Brady for the workaround. Not having full access to multiplayer is making us unhappy though.
This is also a problem in the 1.8 beta builds.
I think that this is caused by RAM, when I'm in the beta, I would look at Mem and Highest Mem and I would see Mem be 1MB lower than Highest Mem.
What I mean:
LET M be memory and H be the highest memory
Freeze: M=H-1
Crash: M=H
So, If Minecraft uses 511MM of memory and the highest(allocated) memory is 512 MB, the game will freeze.
So, If Minecraft uses for example 512 MB of memory and the highest(allocated) memory is 512 MB, the game will crash
This has always been my observation every time I try to play the game. Having lots of RAM would help but having very few RAM will make the game suffer. I hope they could fix this.
(EVEN IF GAME MODE WAS OFF)
I have the prob I just used the Xbox live app on my laptop and signed out so i don't get signed in and I have no probs with the game freezing and crashing.
have this happening in the 1.9 betas. I had to log in to get the new textures so I thought i'd try it. it struggled for five minutes then decided it would work. but after a short time it froze completely. and the memory is NOT that high. its less than it is when im not signed in. this is really doing my head in now.
I cant play with any of the mashup packs I've bought. I've wasted money on them because I just cant play them
Thank you for your report!
Crashes such as these are logged automatically, and will be looked into further by the development team.

I have the same thing happening on 1.6 beta. its unplayable -literally - I cant get past the menu screen. I've turned off game mode and it still happens. I've reset the game, uninstalled and reinstalled. it still happens. and it's corrupted the world I had been working on for the last three months, destroying countless hours of work. which is great.
