When I was in a stronghold it said I drowned, there wasn’t even any water near me and I wasn’t even in the game. My stuff is nowhere to be seen. Hours of progress lost.

This is because while you're still on the loading screen, your character has already been placed in the world, and can take damage and die before you even can control it

Not sure if this is exactly the same issue, but I play on Android. I created a new world after updating my game. I was standing in my new little house when i logged off. When I logged back on I was several hundred blocks away from my house and falling from a height. I died on impact. This is vanilla minecraft, too. No packs or skins or anything. It was very weird.
