Items disappear

In survival I was heading to my house and had buckets in my hand. My inventory was full and I accidentally collected water with my buckets. Since my inventory was full, the water bucket didn't go into inventory and should have dropped it. I looked around and didn't see it as a dropped item. It had just vanished into thin air.
