I recently made a minecraft resource pack to change the textures of the Wolf, the British Short Hair Cat and the Red Cat.
When I try and tame these animals they become a weird shade of red(see image) and I don't understand quite why.

I FOUND THE SOLUTION: And it was honestly a LOT easier then I expected it to be.
Note: This requires Photoshop or GIMP photo editors.
The "Tamed Cat" or "Tamed Wolf" textures seem to be just the collars- they are NOT. You can see what I mean by going to the channels section, you'll see that if you hide the Alpha layer you will see the default cat texture under the collar. So the question is- how do you fix that issue? Everyone in the comments section so far seems to be just putting their collared cat texture over it- which in turn causes the custom texture to entirely change color with the dyes.
To fix this issue- open up the .tga file of the Tamed-Cat or Wolf texture. Drag and drop your cat texture .png (with the collar on it for tamed) and delete the default layer.
Next: Duplicate your .png so that it covers over 2 layers. The Top most layer you will create a layer mask on, and make it so only the collar appears on that layer. (In the layer mask section everything should be black while the collar is white).
Now to the actual cat- on the other layer that you duplicated.... Set the opacity to 1%..... Seriously. Its that easy. That's how the original default texture was already. The Opacity was so low it LOOKED like it was just the collar- but it wasn't. (Picture included shows how the finished texture file should look)
[media]I still don't quite understand what I would need to do, I'm trying to change a cat's texture but it changes the entire cat's texture.
I have the same issue and can't find any help anywhere.
