When trying to get Smooth Stone it is impossible to get it through a furnace unless you use silk touch. It won't work if you smelt cobblestone and then try to smelt stone.

Can't get Smooth Stone without Silk Touch Pickaxe. The only workaround is easy if you would like to waste time and get silk touch.
