Steps to Reproduce:
Obtain a shulker box and a dye of any kind.
Place the shulker box and put an item in it.
Break the shulker box and dye it in Survival mode directly from the recipe book.
Move the cursor over the shulker box to see that it still has the item in it.
Try to place the shulker box.
The shulker box will be placed for a split second and then return to your inventory empty.

Crafting by placing the box and dye into the menu does not remove the items; I would suggest doing it that way for now. Definitely make a backup before dying/modifying important shulkers 😃 Luckily I had a version of my world open from some debugging yesterday in an editor and was able to copy out the shulker inventories that I lost - that was a close one!
