Chests Disappeared, placeholder still there, contents inaccessible

I set up a Minecraft Bedrock server on an Ubuntu Server VM running on my home lab Hyper-V server about a year ago for my kids. It is updated regularly (whenever the minecraft server process starts, and I perform manual updates to Ubuntu weekly).

My son complained that some of his chests have 'disappeared'. I got him to show me, and sure enough three of his large chests are invisible and inaccessible. They were working fine yesterday. There are still invisible 'boxes' where the chests should be, but right-clicking on them does nothing. Left-clicking on them attempts to mine them - you can see the little 'wood chip' graphics you would get from attempting to mine a normal chest. Two of these are full to the brim with several weeks worth of manually mined ore. The third was only partially full. As a test, I destroyed the one with the least contents to see what would happen - I was able to mine two small chests, but the contents were lost. The recovered chests could then be placed and recombined into a large chest as normal.

I'm not sure what could be causing a localised flaw like this - all of the other chests we've checked in the world seem fine, it's just these three that are next to each other.

Is there any possibility the contents of these chests can be recovered? It's possible I could roll back to a backup, but the problem is he spent the day mining obsidian - he has about eight stacks, so that becomes a choice of lose the chest contents or lose the obsidian. I'd prefer if there was just a way to fix the broken chests.

Thanks for that IonicEcko. I did actually see a number of bugs reporting invisible chest issues, but all of them seemed to suggest that either all chests in those worlds were affected, whereas in mine it only affected three of them (well, that I'm aware of), and those chests usually remain interactive (functional), whereas mine are completely inaccessible. If the chests were accessible I would just collect their contents and replace them - I wouldn't have even bothered with a bug report. But my issue is both more targeted (specific chests) yet far more problematic (imagine if very valuable items had been lost!).

I don't know what your rule system is about replicating existing issues/tickets, but to my way of thinking this is actually a different issue in some rather important ways... But it's your bug ticketing system, categorise it however you like 🙂

Re-writing this because I'm stressing about how it read haha! It sounded far "shorter" than it should have 😛

What I was trying to say was, I understand what you're saying, based purely on the description they do seem distinct, but it appears that a mod re-opened the request as the master for this issue when issues started cropping up again in 1.14.1.

All the comments post the re-open seem to mimic your report to a T.

I'll mark it for a mod to review just in case they want to grab one of the newer ones and make it a master for the regression.

Ah ok, fair enough - I could see there were some that appeared closer to my issue, but they weren't root reports so I didn't think that's where I should attach this 🙂

I'll go upvote it now 😉
