Old worlds cannot be deleted

Old worlds cannot be deleted. I've chosen edit, clicked the red cross and said yes to the deletion, but the the worlds list stays the same. Worlds that have been deleted can still be played. Is there a fix that won't result in uninstalling minecraft? I don't want to lose all worlds!
