Any animal which is rideable is mounted instead of attaching a lead. Lead is held in the right hand and trying to attach by pressing L2. Crouching does not help. Leads do still work on animals which are not rideable, attaching with the same button press. Not sure on the version, I know it is the 2.05 update.
