Items Instantly Despawned on Death

I was playing in a multiplayer world with a friend (he was host) and we were in the end. I got attacked by 2 enderman and died. When I died, I did have a totem of undying so that was used and I tried to get away. The enderman kept hitting me and I died again, this time actually killing me. When my items dropped, there were only 3 items left out of 15 meaning that 12 of my items were deleted. My friend watched me die and picked up my items so they wouldn't despawn and he said there were only 2 armor pieces and my elytra and xp. The other items such as tools, food, shulker box, and ender chest were no where to be found even after mining around the area. I believe that they either could've lagged through the end stone and into the void or just instantly despawned. Thank You for your time. 🙂
