I'm going to try to keep this as simple as possible because it's quite alot. My hopper will not pull from the chain above it if it has an active redstone torch underneath of it. If I remove the torch it will pull from the hopper chain above it. If I direct the hopper above it directly into it it will pull even with an active redstone torch beneath it. I was under the impression that as long as ther items in hoppers inventory slots matched ones going through the hopper chain that they would be pulled regardless of redstone torch which is how sorters work? Redstone signal locks a certain block/s in the hopper and prevents it from draining entirely into the chests downstream allowing the filtering option. Further it seems odd to me that the hopper will pull under certain circumstances with active torch under but not others. Please advise/ fix if possible.

What am I doing wrong then? I'm trying to make a sorting system. If I face the hopper into the other one it stops different items from going through the filter but they also fail to continue down the hopper chain is this normal behavior.
This is my first sorting room and one of my bigger redstone builds, I really dont want to give up on it because minecraft changed the mechanics and broke sorting systems, are they still possible?
I made the same mistake when I first tried to make a sorting system with hoppers set up as item filters. You need 3 levels of hopper including the "pipe" that carries items across the top. Here is a demo for you to study (it sorts the naturally-spawning wool colors in to separate chests and dumps everything else into lava):

Powering a hopper disables it from collecting, pulling and pushing, but it does not prevent other hoppers from pushing items into it.
