Since the Nether Update, I cannot eat unless I'm under 1 and 1/2 hunger bars. Sometimes, I can't eat at all no matter how hungry my character is. This has caused me to die on many occasions since.

For now: when your hunger goes to 0 I'd suggest going into peaceful difficulty and back when it gets to 10.
