In my normal world, I (windows) play multiplayer crossplay with a friend on console and we notice there are no mobs spawning at all. When I go to the nether and they stay in the overworld, we notice the mobs start spawning again. We notice that when the phantoms come, mobs start to spawn again but then they disappear after we sleep.

Is this still an issue in the latest version? Mob spawning and despawning distances have changed in 1.16.0, 1.16.20, and 1.16.100. It could also be that you had some leftover persistent mobs from before the 1.16 update, such as drowned built up in a small pool. If you are still experiencing the issue, please update the ticket and clarify if this happens in all worlds or just one.

I am having this same issue. I can't find any hostile mobs naturally. I can only find them in the nether, rarely, or near mob spawners. I cant find creepers, skeletons, spiders, zombies, slimes, or witches. They just don't spawn in my world. I have stood completely still at night and in caves and not a single mob spawns. This is really unfortunate, as I can't get gunpowder or find zombies to change villagers. I need this fixed for my world to continue.
I am having this issue on PC.
