when ever me and my friends kill this god forsaken dragon we never get any exp at all, we go up about 3 or 4 lvls but thats all we get , i thought this may because the exp is going towards armour and weapons that have mending so i decided to try kill him with no enchanted gear but still didnt get any exp, not only this but some exp is visible and cant be collected , i have tried leaving the end and it works to an extent as i gain a small section of exp but thats all, but on the rare chance i will get the normally get to lvl 40 - 55 when killing the dragon

Do you mean that the Ender Dragon will not drop 12,000 exp, or do you mean that the Ender will not drop 500 exp. Because you are supposed to get 12000 the first time and 500 the times after that. The exp not collecting is a big glitch, though.
sometimes after killing the dragon the exp will not be collectable, i would have to leave the end and come back and once i do i wont get the max 500 exp
