Creepers and charged creepers are only doing 1 point of damage (1/2heart) through walls. I tested with Creepers and charged creepers with one block of dirt at foot level in between creeper and player. Also tested with zombie and skeleton, had two dirt blocks forming a wall between creeper and zombie/skeleton and they took no damage. Tested on version 1.16.40.
