When trying to view a map that is zoomed out 1x, 2x as far as i can tell right now will disconnect you from realm, but 0x works fine and as far as i can tell now 3x works fine too, is there a fix yet? I can post photos if needed...
--UPDATE--
So I have since figured more on the map issue.. it seems like when you make a map and zoom it out then make another fresh map and zoom that one out as well it causes an error somewhere not sure... is there a way to install a bug reporter on minecraft windows 10 edition?

I get the same or similar thing.
Some places I can make a map with a compass and click "create map" and it works fine.
Other places when I click create map, using a blank map with a compass, I get a blank map in my characters hands that has a working position indicator...but within 10 seconds I get the "Disconnected from server" message also. I can't connect for approx 1 minute after that. I actually think it is crashing the realms server or something? I will try to do it when someone is logged in and see if they get disconnected also... If I quickly quit the world after I see the blank map...like within 1 second or so...then I can successfully leave the world but I still can't connect for 1 minute.
Some places....possibly well explored area's...if not completely explored area's....seem to be what potentially doesn't cause the problem buy I am not sure yet. I don't have enough experience with maps when they worked properly to know how to troubleshoot this much more than seeing if it disconnects other people from the realm.
Happening to me as well. Created an empty map. As soon as I activate it within a region I just see a blank map in my hands and then within 10 seconds I am disconnected from my realms server and can't connect for about 1-2 minutes.
Me to, using a fully zoomed out map in a realm. It' only happens in certain places though. I wonder if it has to do with something it fails to render within the visible area or something because it really seem to be consistently crashing in the same area, working fine in areas far away. Took me a while to connect the dots since I've been using my map for a while, and there's a delay from map usage to disconnection.
I've not been testing too much though, since I got tired of waiting each time the realm crashed.
Now that you mention it this seems to be consistent with what I experience. Trying to make any map when in a certain area(s) results in the realm server crashing. It doesn't happen in most places when creating a standard map with a compass that isn't zoomed. I have not experimented much more with zoomed maps yet.
All my experience in regard to this thread is in survival and using MCPE on Android or Windows 10 edition if that matters.
I have a similar issue. Using a blank map will cause the server to crash in certain areas. I am using Windows 10 MCPE.
We know that the bug is not fixed yet. However, the same bug has already been reported as MCPE-19354.
I'm having what seems like the same issue. This seems to be a problem only with Realms (with MCPE 1.0.0); I've downloaded my world, and am able to play it locally just fine. Here's the steps I've found to repro the issue:
1. Create a new map (Level 0/4)
2. Activate the map
3. Create a compass
4. Combine the map and the compass
Note: At this point you can equip the map, view it, and the player's marker will appear and rotate just fine.
5. Upgrade the map to Level 1/4
6. Equip the map
7. View/Use the map
Note: the player's marker will appear, but will not rotate.
8. In less than 1 minute the client will be disconnected and the player will get the message "Disconnected from Server"
Note: Trying to return to the Realm immediately will be met with the message "Unable to connect to world"; it takes approx. 2 to 3 minutes before the player will be allowed back in.
Also, if the player has an open slot on their hotbar, with that open slot selected as the active slot, when they perform step 5 to upgrade the map to Level 1/4, and they use a "Quick Move" (default Y-button), steps 6 and 7 will automatically be performed, and after the player is disconnected the upgraded map will disappear from their inventory permanently.
