Realms taking extremely long time to load

When I click to enter my minecraft realm, I reach the "loading realm" page and it stays like that for an extremely long time (several minutes). Sometimes it will eventually load up, but others it will pop up with the error "An error has occured. Please try again."

Normally, it takes only a few seconds to enter.
