Some of the games in the "Get Minecraft" section of minecraft.net are named incorrectly, which creates needless confusion for people trying to get the right game. This is important because only the cross-play (Bedrock) versions of the game should use the prefix "Minecraft for".
Currently | Should be |
---|---|
Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition | Minecraft for Windows |
Minecraft for Xbox 360 | Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition |
Minecraft for PlayStation 3 | Minecraft: PlayStation 3 Edition |
Minecraft for PlayStation Vita | Minecraft: PlayStation Vita Edition |
Minecraft for Wii U | Minecraft: Wii U Edition |
Minecraft for New Nintendo 3DS | Minecraft: New Nintendo 3DS Edition |

"Going forward, the Bedrock Engine-based version of Minecraft will be called simply Minecraft on all platforms. Our general rule of thumb is that if a version can play together with the others, it’s called Minecraft. The original Java PC version and all other isolated versions will have “Edition” names, like Minecraft: Wii U Edition and Minecraft: Java Edition."
Is there any precedent for how these games should be named? Asking since if there's a reference then there's a basis for change.
