@matthew a. Nickerson

mine was 99% water issues.
Installed optifine, turned off water movement and partials and while there is still some lag every time a water chunk loads in it's MUCH less- barely noticeable really AND it makes the game finally playable for me and my whole group again.
For what it's worth I recommend anyone having this issue to at least install the optifine mod and try.
If it doesn't fix the issue for everyone- I have either been following the wrong topic since 1.8 came out or it's more than one single issue.

Bram,
i am on a 64bit windows 8 computer 8gb ram Radeon HD 8330 quad core, I completely I completely uninstalled java to make sure all versions were removed and installed 64bit java 8- still problems.
Under your launcher profile you can set it to launch the game with older versions of minecraft stored on your computer, not playing 1.8 is the only way I can play.

Attempted java 8 as suggested above, no change..

I didn't play any of the pre-release's, but I can say yesterday before the update everything worked fine for me and this morning it's too choppy to play.
Please provide me the option to play the old version at least until you get this bug fixed.
This is happening to us on on our server and on our single player.
