Returned to this map again to retest the issue after newest update. When I returned to the area where I had tamed wolf, he respawned. I think newest update fixed this bug.
I tried to "lose" him by running across the map again. Could not reproduce the bug. Dog is sticking with my character now with no problems. I will try to reproduce the bug again in future and update if it occurs.
