Can confirm this issue still exist for current version 1.14.1. Tested on the PS4 platform.
It only happens when there is an opaque block 1 block above the stem. After I planted all the crops in the following screenshot, I changed the random tick speed from 1 to 500 and waited for a minute:

The melon stems and pumpkin stems below smooth stone blocks didn't grow at all.

When the blocks above the stems are transparent, melons/pumpkins grow normally.
I believe this is not how crop growth intended to work.
Thanks for pointing out this is an existing issue! I am not particularly familiar with how block update works in the game, the workaround provided in MC-161248 doesn't work for my case. Can you provide a solution for my case?
