This "despawning" happened to me yesterday on an SMP server. Tied donkey to post, slept to make night pass faster (about 20 blocks away), donkey was gone along with saddle and contents of chest. The rope appeared to be still wrapped around the post, but when I right clicked it, it just vanished, dropping no rope and releasing no donkey.
No portals anywhere in that chunk. It was in a village that I have protected enough that I've not seen any weird intrusions in. Oddly, I do see baby villagers all the time even though I've added no doors in a long time. Any weird "villager drowning in the well" bug shouldn't have touched a donkey tied to the post, however.
