I have reinstalled Minecraft, keeping my saves. The bug remains unchanged.

The bug now makes the game virtually unplayable. It occurs once every 1-1.5 minutes, or approx. once in three attempts to place a block. I have also updated to Java 7 Update 40 and the bug remains unchanged.
