When you mine armor stands you don't get your armor back. In Minecraft on survival mode to mine any block u must hold down the left side of your mouse, however with the armor stand it does not allow you to do so; instead you must repeatedly click.

When you place a single fence down you see the normal texture, however when you place down connecting fences the texture changes.
