This is easy just find a diffrent version like 1.6.4 should work better you'll still be able to play with people with different downloads.

I've had this problem many of time all you need to do is force update you're Mine craft (first you should disable you're java) then play single player for a second then you need to try to use you're command like /Creative /Survival /Adventure /kill /die /level surface this command will (should) reset most of the java resources in you're game then re-enable you're java [you should be good to play Multilayer and Single Player..
