I have a very similar issue with the initial connection. It will say cannot connect to realms for a very long time (several minutes). Eventually the realm will suddenly show up and I can connect. In my case I do not get disconnected during gameplay.
No other game or internet service have connectivity issues on my computer. The problem is the same with the firewall turned off. No 3rd party antivirus or firewall.
Everything works as expected on my daughters iPad which is connected to the same network.
This issue is with realms not showing at all. The issue marked as duplicate REALMS-10945 describes problems connecting to realms that are shown.
