@David Harmon For me minecraft is a sandbox (single/multieplayer). All tries to balance it are hopeless in my opinion. Things like extreme xp cost to randomly enchant, repair or even rename a item of your choosing and the anvil breaking after a few uses are a pain to play with. Some people do believe these things are important and while I can't see the point of it, it is still their valid opinion!
Let me try and confince you that this bugfix is not a balance issue: If you are holding all your animals in a small place it will look ugly as hell, selecting any specific animal will be impossible and you will have a problem with framerate anyway. At the moment only chickens produce goods by themselfs and eggs are already overfilling any storage method if you build just one small chicken farm. Also please don't forget that in the current state no farm is working as expected anyway - it's still a bug and a nasty one, too...
