I don't know whether there is a good way to make the two features coexist without making some weird exceptions for wet sponge. I hope someone can figure something out, but if not, am I overlooking something or is the feature that removes the empty lava bucket much more useful that recovering water from wet sponge (as well as having some kind of "seniority" and being already implemented in many automated furnaces)? It's not really discussing bugs anymore but I'd much rather keep my automated furnace working than be able to recover water when I dry wet sponge.

I can confirm that the bug is still here in 14w30c. Even in a more minimal setup where the furnace is manually filled with a bucket of lava (or an empty bucket) as fuel and with some combustible, the hopper underneath isn't able to retrieve the empty bucket. It does however still retrieve the smelted materials.
