Can confirm, controller does not work when on table top or handheld mode, works when using the dock.

Try clicking on the 3 dots at the top right and to downloads and updates?

As a workaround, I was able to force an update by going into the Microsoft Store and in the top right there should be a number with an arrow, click on that and force an update.
