I just tried it in the Minecraft 1.7 pre-release & it worked for me!I did
/give @p minecraft:iron_leggings 1

Both of these commands worked for me!
Sorry, I forgot to mention the command I used.This can only be done using a command block because the command is too long to fit in chat.
/setblock ~0 ~1 ~0 minecraft:wall_sign 2 replace {Text1:"<>===========<>",Text2:"POWER",Text3:"ᵒᶠᶠ □■ ᵒⁿ",Text4:"<>===========<>"}
