Can confirm that the crash does not occur if crafting is done via the recipe book.

I've had this issue on 14w31a also, seems to not be related to position on screen (Have had this only at edges, and only in centre on different occasions), and also seems to fix itself upon a client restart (Took a SS of the issue, restarted, and at the same location/angle could not replicate.)
