This just happened to me in realms, playing Minecraft Windows 10 v1.1.5. I didn't catch the type of death string. But the armor break sound played when the projectile hit me. When I respawned, my rightmost heart was gold and not full. This returned to normal after 2-3 minutes. I returned to the location of death in the Nether, and found that my armor had been completely destroyed when I was hit. I recovered all other items.
This is so bizarre. it isn't in the wiki at all and there are few traces of it online in general. I don't see how it could be a glitch though. If it isn't I'd suggest getting rid of it. In survival, building a strong set of armor can take an inordinate amount of time. To have it all annihilated is just... lame volvo pls fix
