An other idea would be, that they want to have access to the center of the village, which would be confirmed by the behaviour described in the comment above.
Okay i had a villager that i locked up for very long and he never gave me new trades, even if he had his work station there. Now i "released" him into the village and in about 2 minutes he unlocked all of his trades, maybe because there were reachable beds or because he is "free" under the sky, if you know what i mean
@violine1101 Is there any condition, that has to be given, that they work on their station except having direct access to it? Like having food, enough light etc.
