I had this happen as well. I was super confused as I was making a Blaze farm, had full diamond armor with high level protection, and had been clearing out the spawner area for over 10 minutes. Then suddenly a Blaze spawned, instantly fired a salvo and killed me on the spot. I went back to recover my items, thinking maybe my armor had been destroyed - but I picked it all up with easily 90% hp left on every bit of armor. I then died again to a single shot, even though I had full iron armor on.
This sadly happened 4 times before I managed to sneak in and kill everything and get back what gear I could. Most of it was lost. This is a seriously messed up bug.
