Well, that's part of it, but that bug report doesn't mention that the same effect happens when you actually craft with a full stack and they fall to the floor.
Not me; I press E again to close it, so I don't have to move my hand to press Esc. Efficient (read: lazy) fingers. 🙂
I can confirm that this bug exists in 17w18b. Amusingly enough, I was using the exact same pickaxe when it occurred.
