The issue of ambient occlusion seems to (still) be the lighting engine. When a block has indents such as a crafting table, and that block has ambient occlusion from touching the side of another block, the insides will turn dark. This bug occurs with a majority of 3D blocks and even with just 2D intersecting plane blocks such as grass and flowers.
I hope the developers fix this issue – it's plaguing ALL resource packs and can even inhibit the creativity that can come from them. This is also a visual bug that should have been fixed a long time ago but was brushed off as "too minor to fix." This clearly is not too minor to fix it if it plagues even your own features.
