I've just experienced this issue in a moddded world while wearing 4 pieces of armor with an armor toughness of 7 (from tinkers' armory). I'm stuck in this state and there's nothing I can think of to fix it. More than an exploit, I'd call this a very destructive bug, as within this altered state I'm unable to take damage, pick up items, interact with any blocks with a GUI (they immediately close) and the screen shakes violently.
