It appears this may have been fixed today in 1.8-pre3. Perhaps related to https://bugs.mojang.com/browse/MC-61050 ?

Can also confirm issue: 10.9.4, 1.8-pre2. Using the native fullscreen button does work, but I wasted quite a bit of time figuring that out.

Mojang: It would be great if you could DISABLE or REMAP the fullscreen button in the meantime on OSX retina until this bug is fixed.
