This was also kind of displayed in an IbxToycat video on YouTube (This 1.18 feature can RUIN your world (or save it) )
with their existing world.
I should have also mentioned that my world was also an existing world already, but that may have been guessable.
I had this issue a few months ago. I just thought it was a "me" thing, but apparently not. I've fixed my issue by now, but I hope you guys get some kind of fix. its a serious issue that we get no warning for.
Cloudy, I (and I think most people commenting) disagree with the statement that it is barely noticable – the effect is more or less severe under certain circumstances (it seems to be related to number of torches in view) – in some points of view (my experience), it appears almost as a static, with no fewer than 3 errant flames out of place; It has been so noticable for me that I'm putting the game aside for now. Since I didn't experience any of the crashes that you refer to it's a net-loss for me.
P.S. The tone of this comment is resigned – not angry. Bugs happen. I am a bit disappointed to hear that it was a known bug, but not entirely surprised. It's hard not to notice it. 😉

Ali describes it better IMO. I'm seeing flames jumping all over the screen. It's so distracting that I've abandoned playing for now, hopefully it will be soon fixed. I've only played with released versions, so if 1.4.3 was never released, that may not be the version the OP intended.

I have lost access to this world, so I no longer know if it affects worlds with both 1.17 generation and 1.18 generation. However, I have since created a new world in 1.18, and haven't noticed the issue.
