However, I have oddly been unable to recreate the bug when re-creating the world, so I really don't know why it happened the first time. All I did before going to the village was wander around, spawn some foxes, and change the time of day once.
Have duplicated issue in 19w08b.
Tested in Creative and Survival by throwing various items at sleeping foxes. If not already holding an item, they pick it up and hold it in their mouths without waking up.
Could not reproduce.
