Geoff,
I'm also running PiHole. I checked my logs and the top blocked domains are all Microsoft and Apple related. I've made no manual changes, they're presumably on one of the default blocklists.

I can confirm this on two iPads. Both crash constantly, starting with the .20 update. Android and Windows 10 are fine playing on the same server. Both iPads have been rebooted.
First-gen iPad Pro crashed (exit to home screen) mid gameplay 4 times in the last hour. Never crashed before the 1.16.20 update. FYI, not sure if related. Did a device reboot just in case, no change.
Could we get a server.properties setting to alter the cap? It seems unreasonable that a few small animal farms breaks hostile mob spawning.
Forge fixes the problem.
This prevents vanilla clients from joining though, correct?
You could always do what I did, which is just set the new gamerule DoDaylightCycle to false.
I did that actually, and set the time to noon. It helps a lot, but overall gameplay is still really laggy and people stopped logging in. We started a new world for horses and if I roll back to 1.5 the horses/armor/new stuff will all disappear forever.
@Michael, it's been more like a month. My friends have all given up on my server which really bums me out. Good thing the Steam sale happened at the same time. I've been enjoying Tropico 4 for my sandbox gaming itch.
I can confirm that adding vortex.data.microsoft.com to my allowlist stops the iOS crashes.
I'm a programmer (in a totally different area) but presumably when the telemetry code fails to resolve the IP address or deliver its payload there is an unhandled exception which insta-crashes the entire app. I'll set my tinfoil down for now but would like to see this fixed. It's my right to block telemetry information gathering I have no way to opt out of nor inspect the content of.
