Zaecus Celestis, I have had a nearly opposite experience. Without the "Unglitch for escaping animals and more" mentioned above, my sheep escape almost exclusively. Mine are not packed into a small space tightly. They have plenty of room and should not be forced together causing some to be pushed through the fence.
It is curious that we could have such opposite experiences with this bug. For the record, since I have started using the "Unglitch for escaping animals and more", I have not had a single escapee. I intentionally over bred my pigs, cows, and chickens to cause overcrowding in their pens and not one ever escaped. For me, the unglitch has resolved this, and a few other problems. I hope our Mojang friends give it a serious look.
After successfully using Daniel's bugfix, I can confirm he and Alexander offer a valid example of how to eliminate this and a few other persistent bugs. Thank you Alexander and Daniel.
