I just encountered an identical sounding issue on my daughter's iPad (running Minecraft PE v1.7.0). In her case, I traced the problem to Custom skin causing crashes (similar to issues report by Android users). If you were using Custom skins, our problems might be the same.

By editing the options.txt file directly, (at /Documents/games/com.mojang/minecraftpe/options.txt), I was able to recover her game by manually changing her skin to the default skin settings:

game_skintypefull:c18e65aa-7b21-4637-9b63-8ad63622ef01_Steve
game_lastcustomskinnew:
game_recentskin1:
game_recentskin2:
game_recentskin3:

I can reproduce the crash by re-editing the "game_skintypefull:" setting back to "c18e65aa-7b21-4637-9b63-8ad63622ef01_Custom".  She can play the game as long as she doesn't use Custom skins.

[An aside: editing App files is not trivial. One method is to download the entire "games" folder using iTunes->File Sharing->Minecraft, editing the file with in the folder, and re-uploading the entire folder back up. Downloading the entire "games" folder is a good idea anyways, if you want to recover your worlds stored in the "minecraftWorlds" folder. In another method, I used a software called "iMazing", to edit just the one file.]

Strangely enough, she was using Custom skins with no problem up until 24 hours ago. And her brother is able to use Custom skins with no crashes. So while the bug has something to do with Custom skins, not using Custom skins avoids the crash but isn't actually fixing the bug.
