It's been 7 years. Is it possible to reconsider the 'works as intended' stance on this issue? I'm a texture pack creator and it bugs me to no end that I can't change textures for certain blocks based on their states. I'd love to show when hoppers are locked or when droppers/dispenser are triggered among other things.

I understand there may be legitimate performance reasons to leave it as is, but could we at least have a game/server setting to enable these updates so people could opt into having the extra functionality?

Still in 20w15a. I understand that you can't because it's a side effect of not being a full block, but now that you can place rails on soul sand (which isn't a full block either) you should also be able to place them on honey blocks.

Observers also don't react to fences/walls/bars/panes that update their north/south/east/west states when a tree grows next to them. In contrast, observers do react to the state change of fences/walls/bars/panes when large mushrooms grow next to them. This has been an issue since at least 1.14.

They also don't trigger observers when a tree grows next to them despite visually changing. This used to work (via bud mechanics) until extended block states were introduced, but since the flattening removed fences extended state, this should once again work.

I'm not sure if this deserves it's own post or just as a note on this one, they seem very similar.
