No error message is displayed. I checked the crash log on my desktop and nothing was generated in the log either. This started within the past week and have determined that it is not the server having the issue. Not sure if this is a possible Java error since no log is created for minecraft. After the initial server connect crashing to the main menu I can connect to other servers just fine but whatever server I attempted to connect to (happens on any server I try home hosted and otherwise) that resulted in the crash to the main menu is listed in red with an error message instead of the server MOTD. However the server itself is up and running just fine.
Please disregard this issue. I was having it for several days but it seems to have corrected itself and is no longer occurring or reproducable.
