I keep having this issue as well, it seems that the more my world gets uncovered the more this glitch persists. The big problem is that when it occurs everything else stops working, I can still move around but no more chunks will load and it is impossible to die, save and quit, input commands or even change the settings. It just softlocks the game and leaves me no other choice but to reboot it. And the worst part is that it's completely random, no way to predict when it will happen.
