Same issue here, Minecraft Launcher does not launch under GNOME Wayland Session, but it does under the GNOME XOrg Session.
EDIT: Galen's workaround, `GDK_BACKEND=x11 ./minecraft-launcher` did not work. Same problem.
P.S.: Make sure that you have your graphics drivers installed.
