Agree, we need an update on this issue or a fix, which isn't turning off your wifi! The fun of the games playing with siblings and friends. I believe there has been enough response from minecraft(PE) users for the minecraft team(mojang) to come up with a solution.
I've just completed the update (1st gen iPad, iOS 5.1.1) for my son and we are also freezing after about 20 seconds of load up!!!! Frustrating!!!! That's if it doesn't force close on the Mojang logo!!!
