I regularly see large magma cubes in my 2x2 nether tunnels. I did not realize that they should not be there because they should require a 2.5 block height to spawn.
As noted in a previous comment, I think the spawn height issue is missing in the noted duplicate bug report and I hope that this can be logged as a new and unrelated report, or the block height concern added to the already logged report.
