I agree, and am having exactly the same problems as all of the other commenters. I'll just switch back to 1.7.2 for now, because in that version, the mob spawning works just fine. The entity count in F3 goes from 16 Max to 80 between 1.7.4 and 1.7.2. Definitely a serious problem that should be fixed.
